How things change

Last Friday, I was sitting at home working on my computer just after Alex had gone to sleep when I felt a small tremor, followed quickly by a more pronounced rumble. Immediately, I knew that I'd just experienced a minor earthquake (I figured about 3 or so), and my first action was to close up my computer and head directly downstairs to where Alex was sleeping.

Nothing else happened (the earthquake was listed by the USGS as 4.0, but centered about 5 miles from us in Alamo), but it really made clear to me how much my life has changed as a result of Alex. My reaction to this quake was radically different from the other small ones I'd been in before; whereas before I'd always thought first, "Holy crap! I hope this isn't big!" this time my first thought was, "Let me get ready to act for Alex right away!" It wasn't anything I had considered or planned. It just happened. In a moment, I saw how my priorities had changed.
