October's surprise is that Friday the Thirteenth comes on Monday (with apologies to Walt Kelly and Pogo).

Yesterday, we took the family off to Rodeo beach on the North end of the Golden Gate bridge, where we spent a relaxing few hours sitting on the pebbly beach. Some of us scooped sand from one bucket to another; others batted a ball back and forth. In case you have doubts about who was who, one nickname for Alexander is Sandy and one nickname for Claire is One-Who-Bats (that goes for Erika as well). My nickname is Lazy.
